Rehab In The Real World

I don’t know where I found this, maybe on Instagram. But I found it and so wanted to go. It was a 5 day adventure rehab retreat with 2 physical therapists in one of my favorite places, Bend Oregon. They had scholarships they could award you to help out with your fee thanks to generous donations. At the time, the cost wasn’t totally in my budget and thankfully I got an award to attend the retreat. I’m so thankful for that, as a repayment I now donate monthly to this organization so I can give back to others who want to attend the retreat or those who live local and can attend some of their other options. This Destination Rehab was such a confidence builder and so helpful in my recovery to see what I could do, even if I wasn’t sure.

Destination Rehab is for people with traumatic brain injury, Parkinson’s, MS, stroke, anyone one with a neurological condition or chronic pain. The whole goal is to get you outside and help you gain confidence. I really got to try things I had never done and do things I had done before injury but didn’t have the confidence to do them post Injury, I sure do now and have done them on my own since attending.

It was just myself and two physical therapists. We first set goals on day 1 and did some exercises to test my balance and get a baseline reading of where I was at. We cooked meals together, played games, rested, went to the lake and paddle boarded and kayaked, hiked and ran, rode recumbent bikes and more. Each adventure I would help load the truck and actively be a participant which was so helpful. My biggest fear at home was being able to load my own paddle boards and carry them. The weekend after I got home, a friend drove my runner with my boards but I was able to help load them and confident in doing so. I so appreciated that, without the experience at Destination Rehab, I wouldn’t of known I could do that and be confident in doing so. Of course I needed lots of help, but I was able to help.

It was truly an amazing experience. It was active. It was fun. I gained a lot of confidence just 15 months after a traumatic, life changing brain injury. If I lived locally in Bend, I would definitely attend their other rehab group options. My goal, our goal my husband and I is to have a home in Bend within the next year as a vacation home for ourselves and as a rental. My goal with that is also to be able to have a home I could donate to Destination Rehab to use for their retreats. That’s our ideal goal, we will keep working towards it in hopes to have the home we want but also keep giving back to a cause we feel is so important.

Destination Rehab also has other events like SOAR in the summer, their Adventure Rehab and probably more so check out the link for more info.
